Our History

A bowl of Watercress

We love watercress

Watercress is a natural superfood, rich in vitamins A, C and E, as well as iron and calcium. It’s incredibly healthy, and tasty too, with a refreshing, peppery flavour. Watercress can be eaten raw or cooked and can be used in anything from sandwiches and salads to soups and stir fries.

Our Farms

We have five watercress farms across Sun Salads UK and Sun Salads Espana. Our four farms in the UK are located in the Dorset, Wiltshire and Hampshire areas of southern England, where our watercress grows in spring water naturally filtered through local chalk. We have our own packing facility on our Holwell farm and can supply pre-packaged watercress or loose watercress for retail, wholesale and processing.

Our Spanish farm in Seville is one of the most advanced of its type. Our watercress is grown under a mesh house which gives protection from pests and extreme weather. We use innovative harvesting technology for minimal product handling. Our Spanish farm means we are able to supply fresh watercress all year round.

Our growing process

We produce our own seeds, then propagate these in our greenhouse. We then plant the seedlings by hand and grow them in natural spring water. It takes around six to eight weeks for our watercress to grow to harvest stage, largely depending on the climate. Once our watercress is ready, we harvest it and package it ready for delivery to our customers.

We comply with many different production standards and schemes including Leaf Marque, Marks & Spencer Field to Fork, Red Tractor Farm Assurance for Fresh Produce, GlobalG.A.P and NFU Watercress Association Code of Practice. We are also a member of Sedex.
